Shohei Ohtani, Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman are a fine trio to have at the top of your team, as the Los Angeles Dodgers showed on Saturday.

The former MVPs opened a crucial division game against the Arizona Diamondbacks with back-to-back-to-back homers from starting pitcher Merrill Kelly. Ohtani led off with his NL-best 44th homer of the season, then Betts and Freeman added to the damage. All three homers measured 400 feet or longer.

The whole thing happened in the span of four throws.

The Dodgers later reported that it was the first time in franchise history that the team had opened a game with three consecutive home runs.

That was just part of a chaotic start to a game between the teams in first and second place in the National League West. After the Dodgers went down without another run, Diamondbacks center fielder Corbin Carroll hit an inside-the-park home run with a fly ball just out of reach of Dodgers’ Kevin Kiermaier.

The D-backs scored three more runs in the inning to take the lead, but the Dodgers struck right back with an Ohtani sacrifice fly and a Freeman RBI single to take a 5-4 lead at the top of the second inning. Arizona outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. then tied the game with a solo homer in the third inning.

The Dodgers won 8-6, with Tommy Edman playing the hero with a two-run single in the top of the ninth inning. The victory extends the Dodgers’ division lead to six games over both the D-Backs and the San Diego Padres.

Ohtani’s home run is particularly significant as he attempts to reach an unprecedented 50 home runs and 50 stolen bases on a season-high. The two-time MVP already made history in the series with his 43rd home run and steal on Friday, breaking a tie with Alex Rodriguez for the most of each stat in a single season.

With a full month left in the regular season, Ohtani still has plenty of time to put together an unforgettable season.
