“Shogun” is the absolute top show on television.

The FX series, a historical drama set in feudal Japan that also streamed on Hulu, walked away with the most nominations of any series this year at the 76th Emmy Awards, with 25 nominations. It won more awards than any other series, taking home a whopping 18 trophies, split between the Creative Arts Emmys and the Primetime Emmy Awards.

Which Emmy categories did ‘Shogun’ win?

“Shogun,” based on the 1975 novel of the same name by James Clavell, swept the top prizes at the 76th Emmy Awards, winning Outstanding Drama Series and Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series.

Two of the stars also won an Emmy Gold on Sunday night: Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai won the awards for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series and Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series, respectively.

The majority of the show’s Emmys, 14 in total, were awarded at the Creative Arts Emmys, which took place the weekend before the Primetime Emmy Awards.

Among the winners was a golden statuette for another cast member, Néstor Carbonell, who won the award in the category of best guest actor in a drama series.

How did the cast of ‘Shogun’ react to their victories?

In his acceptance speech, Sanada called “Shōgun” an “East-West dream project” and talked about what he learned from working on the project, both as an actor and a producer.

“When people work together, we can do wonders,” he said. “We can create a better future together.”

Sawai gave an emotional acceptance speech in which she thanked her fellow cast members and gave a sweet shout-out to her mother.

“Mom, I love you. You are the reason I am here. You showed me stoicism, and that’s how I was able to portray Mariko,” she said of her character, before dedicating her win to “all the women who expect nothing and remain an example to everyone.”

How does the new ‘Shogun’ compare to the previous edition at the Emmys?

The 1980 miniseries “Shogun”, which aired one episode each night for five consecutive nights, was nominated for a total of 14 Emmy Awards and won three awards at the 1981 awards ceremony.

The film won for Best Limited Series, Best Costume Design for a Series, and Best Graphic Design and Title Sequences.

Three of the miniseries nominations included actors Toshiro Mifune, Yoko Shimada and John Rhys-Davies for the same roles played in the 2024 series by Sanada, Sawai and Carbonell respectively.
