Shedeur Sanders becomes first American football player to sign NIL deal with Nike, following in his father’s footsteps — ‘Now it’s a family business’

Shedeur Sanders follows in his father’s footsteps and signs a contract with Nike.

Deion Sanders, head football coach at the University of Coloradofirst signed with Nike in the 1990s and the collaboration led to his own shoes, CBS Sports reports.

Deion would later part ways with the footwear retailer, cementing a longtime partnership with Under Armour. He made a comeback to Nike in 2023, paving the way for a new footwear collection, including a new iteration of the “Varsity Maize” Nike Air DT Max ’96, per Complex.

Deion’s legacy at Nike now includes his son Shedeur, who has signed a name, image and likeness (NIL) deal, becoming the first college football player to sign with Nike, according to Andscape.

According to On3, Shedeur’s current NIL valuation is $4.7 million.

“Now it’s a family business,” a statement shared on Instagram reads.

“He ain’t got ‘next’, he ain’t got ‘NOW’! @shedeursanders @2legendary @nike #Dad,” Deion also publicly congratulated his son on Instagram in a comment.

Shedeur has already hinted at what’s to come at Nike, hoping to build on his father’s legacy with his signature shoes.

“I would like to build on it,” the University of Colorado football player said on his podcast “2Legendary with Shedeur Sanders.” “I would have a different version, a different concept, because I feel like it’s more, like now, just looking at life and looking at everything, it’s more about like, you know, generation, it’s more about what could be passed on year after year after year…instead of everyone starts they are a whole new wave because there is no real substance behind it it. Everything great must have a story. Ereally good players need to have a story. So I think when it comes to design and everything that goes with it, must always have a great story behind it.”
