September’s Full Supermoon Will Be a Partial Lunar Eclipse: What You Need to Know

In September there is a new full moon, also known as the ‘harvest moon’, as summer comes to an end and autumn sets in.

Celebrity astrologer Kyle Thomas, who is known for providing cosmic guidance to celebrities, businesses and online influencers, spoke to “Good Morning America” about the best ways to take advantage of this powerful and emotional lunar event.

In collaboration with the J. Paul Getty Museum, Thomas will participate in the Getty’s exhibition “Rising Signs: The Medieval Science of Astrology,” joining a panel in an online conversation on October 3 to discuss the connection between medieval astrology and popular contemporary practices. Read more about the event here.

But first let’s look at the meaning of the Harvest Moon.

When can you see the full harvest moon?

According to NASA, the full moon will reach its peak brightness in the United States on Tuesday, September 17 at 10:35 p.m. (Eastern Time).

The moon will appear full for about three days, from Monday night through Thursday morning, the agency said. There will also be a partial lunar eclipse during the full moon.

What is a lunar eclipse?

Lunar eclipse is a natural phenomenon that occurs when the Earth passes between the Sun and the Moon. This causes the Earth’s shadow to fall on the Moon, making it appear darker and reddish.

For this particular event, which occurs during the Harvest Moon, the moon will enter Earth’s partial shadow at 8:41 p.m. ET and full shadow at 10:13 p.m. ET, according to NASA.

The Moon will leave full shadow at 11:16 p.m. and partial shadow at 12:47 a.m. on Wednesday morning.

The Harvest Moon is also a Supermoon

This September’s full moon is also known as a supermoon. This moon occurs when the moon is at or near its closest point in its orbit, making the harvest moon appear much brighter and larger than normal.

Why is it called the harvest moon?

The Old Farmer’s Almanac, which first published names for full moons in the 1930s, states that the full moon was called the Harvest Moon because on some evenings the moon rises shortly after sunset, creating an abundance of bright moonlight shortly after sunset.

The event helps farmers and their teams harvest summer crops.

The Harvest Moon can occur in September or October, depending on the proximity of the autumnal equinox.

Another full moon that can also occur in September is the so-called Corn Moon. According to NASA, this is the period when the major crops, such as corn, pumpkins, gourds, beans and wild rice, are harvested.

What Zodiac Sign is the Harvest Moon in September?

The constellation for each full moon is determined by where the moon is in the night sky in relation to different astrological signs. Each year, the moon shifts, resulting in different features around the moon, Thomas said.

This year, the Harvest Moon is a lunar eclipse in Pisces, a water sign and the 12th and final sign on the zodiac wheel. It is on the opposite axis of the earth sign, Virgo.

“This means that both signs have ties to our health — physical or mental — and also to the physical or spiritual world,” Thomas said. “This duality grounds us in the practical, while also opening us up to the divine.”

Rituals and Manifestations to Try During the Harvest Moon

The Harvest Moon, the full moon in September this year, is also a partial lunar eclipse and will occur on September 17, 2024.

Many ancient cultures and religions celebrate the celestial cycles, while also finding ways to honor and harness the power of the full moon.

To make the most of this intense energy, many astrologers believe that the full moon is a good time to manifest your dreams.

Thomas said it is never encouraged to manifest during a lunar eclipse because the energy is “incredibly chaotic, intense and powerful.”

“Lunar eclipses are three times as powerful and emotional as full moons,” he added.

Thomas suggested asking yourself and the universe questions, which is an even more effective way to harness this energy.

Possible meditations, mantras or journal questions:

  • How can I surrender to the flow of the universe?
  • How can I trust the natural rhythm of life and move gracefully?
  • How can I let go of my fears, inhibitions, traumas and addictions?
  • How can I raise my mind to the highest vibration?
