Sepp van den Berg transfer: Brentford complete initial £20m deal to sign Liverpool defender amid interest from Bayer Leverkusen | Football News

Brentford have signed defender Sepp van den Berg from Liverpool.

The centre-back joined the Reds from Eredivisie club PEC Zwolle in 2019 for £4.4million and made four first-team appearances for the club.

Brentford have agreed to pay £20million upfront for the defender, who has signed a five-year contract, plus £5million in performance-related bonuses.

In addition, there is a 17.5 percent resale clause.

The Bees defeated German champions Bayer Leverkusen, who ultimately had no intention of signing the centre-back.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Brentford head coach Thomas Frank said: “I am delighted that we have secured Sepp. I think he is a fantastic signing for the club and the team.

“Sepp is a central defender with a good level and he has the potential to develop further.

“He fits our culture and the way we want to play: he is fast, reads the game well and is calm on the ball in build-up play and decisive defensive actions.

“Sepp is a great character and I am convinced that he will fit in well with the group and take us forward.”

Van den Berg has been monitored by Brentford for some time and the relationship between the two clubs is positive.
