The 2024 MTV Video Music Awards red carpet is known for its extravagant and over-the-top fashion shows.

Every year, the MTV VMAs bring together artists from across the genres in a celebration of music and must-see moments. But before the stars step foot inside the UBS Arena in Elmont, NY, they debut looks that will be talked about for years to come.

Who can forget the scandalous lilac jumpsuit and unusual shell-shaped pasty that Lil’ Kim wore to the 1999 awards show or Rose McGowan’s barely-there dress from the 1998 ceremony? We’d be remiss if we didn’t mention Lady Gaga’s controversial 2010 look made entirely of raw beef.

Celebrities know that the VMAs are the place to make a splash. Here are some of the most unforgettable looks from the event.

Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift put on an edgy show as she walked the black carpet. The “Fortnight” singer, who will make history tonight as the only artist to win Video of the Year three times in a row and five times in total, channeled her inner punk in a yellow plaid corset dress by Dior. Swift, who supported Kamala Harris for president on Instagram on Sept. 10, finished the look with black leather gloves.

Sabrina Timmerman

Sabrina Carpenter channeled Old Hollywood glamour in a vintage Bob Mackie gown worn by Madonna to the 1991 Oscars. The “Taste” singer, who is nominated for seven awards including Artist of the Year, stunned in a strapless, form-fitting gown with a sweetheart neckline.

Chappell Roan

First-time VMA nominee and recording artist Chappell Roan wore a sheer black dress with a plunging neckline. She wore a sage green velvet cape. She carried a sword in her hand.

Her mesh gloves, silver cuffs, cross pendant and metallic claw-like nails further enhanced her gothic look.

Katy Perry

Katy Perry, winner of the 2024 Video Vanguard Award, wore an asymmetrical top and a low-rise skirt from Who Decides Wear’s spring/summer 2025 collection.

Megan Thee Stallion

Megan Thee Stallion, who served as both host and performer, wore a glamorous black dress with a corseted bodice and a voluminous, semi-sheer mermaid skirt.

Camila Cabello

Camila Cabello arrived at the VMAs in a gothic-inspired gown featuring delicate black beading by Tony Ward Couture. She paired the dramatic gown with a matching lace veil and cross pendants.

Halsey

Halsey arrived in a vintage Versace dress. During the red carpet pre-show, the “Lucky” singer revealed that the red-and-black leopard-print dress was previously worn by actress Elizabeth Hurley in 1996.

Addison Rae

Addison Rae looked like a Victoria’s Secret Angel as she walked the black carpet. The “Diet Pepsi” singer wore white satin lingerie with a tulle skirt.

Shawn Mendes

Shawn Mendes kept it classic with an all-black suit.

Benson Boone

Four-time VMA nominee Benson Boone wore a sheer black lace blouse with black pants. The “Beautiful Things” singer added some sparkle to his look with silver loafers.

Suki Waterhouse wore a black cut-out dress, which she paired with a feather scarf.

The Little Mermaid actress appeared in a beaded red dress with a strapless, structured bodice.

Shaboozey, nominated for Best New Artist and Song of Summer, kept it casual, wearing a button-down shirt and dark jeans.

Miranda Lambert

Miranda Lambert wore an all-black pantsuit with a striking turquoise collar. Turquoise accents were also seen in her necklace and nails.

Anitta, who is nominated for Best Latin, looked every inch the bride in a white corseted mini dress with matching veil, but with a twist.

Cyndi Lauper wore a black and white suit on the black carpet.

DJ Khaled

DJ Khaled opted for a matching pink shirt and woven pants, with his rose-colored glasses complementing the look.

Karol G

Karol G, nominated for the award for Best Latin American Dance, gave a fiery show in a flame-printed, floor-length dress.

LISA

Four-time VMA nominee LISA made a dramatic entrance in a blush-colored gown, complete with a draped hood and a nude corseted bodice.

Lenny Kravitz

Lenny Kravitz, who performed at the awards show, stuck to his signature rock style and wore an all-leather ensemble.

Crazy Clown Gang

Members of the hip-hop duo Insane Clown Posse, Violent J and Shaggy 2 Dope, wore suits with striking prints.
