Seattle Mariners Make Ridiculously Bad History in Heavy Loss to Yankees

The Seattle Mariners lost to the New York Yankees on Wednesday night. But the 2-1 final in 10 innings doesn’t tell the whole story of how heartbreaking it all was.

The M’s lost in a way no one has ever seen before, a blow after the last three grueling months for the team and the fans.

In the tenth inning, the M’s had runners on first and third with no outs. A simple fly ball could have tied the game. Even a ground ball double play would have done the same. A hit could have won the game if it had been placed well. Instead, Randy Arozarena struck out. As he was retired, he threw his bat down the third base line, barely missing Julio Rodriguez.

Rodriguez was clearly shaken, and then in an attempt to shake it off, he wandered too far off the base, and was doubled from third for the second out of the inning. Justin Turner then emerged to end the game and likely end the M’s playoff chances.

Seattle is now 77-75 on the year. They are 5.0 games behind in the American League West with 10 games to play. They are 3.0 games behind in the wild card race.

This defeat to Seattle was not only crushing, but also historic, but for all the wrong reasons.

According to @OptaSTATS on social media:

The Mariners are the only MLB team in the last 50 years to score the tying run at third base with no outs in the 9th inning or later. However, they lost the game within two batters, without putting the ball in play and without attempting to steal the ball.

Sure, that’s incredibly niche and arbitrary, but it shows how painful this whole experience has been. On June 18, the M’s were 44-31 and 10.0 games ahead in the division. They now have a shot at finishing below .500 and could finish six or seven games behind Houston in the division.

The M’s will try to stop the bleeding on Thursday afternoon when they take on the Yankees again at 1:10 p.m. (local time).
