Sean “Diddy” Combs pleaded not guilty Tuesday afternoon to racketeering and sex trafficking charges that could send him to prison for life.

Prosecutors are arguing before a federal judge in New York that Combs should be held without bail pending the outcome of the trial.

In a brief, prosecutors argued that the seriousness of the charges, combined with Combs’ extraordinary wealth, make him a flight risk. They also allege that Combs obstructed the investigation by pressuring witnesses to lie to law enforcement, and that he could manipulate the case if released.

“The defendant is dangerous and poses an ongoing threat to the safety of the community,” prosecutors allege.

Combs’ attorneys have said the prosecution is “unjust” and that he has cooperated with authorities.

“He is an imperfect person, but he is not a criminal,” attorney Marc Agnifilo said in a statement. “It must be said that Mr. Combs has been nothing but cooperative with this investigation and voluntarily relocated to New York last week in anticipation of these charges. Please reserve judgment until you know all the facts.”

According to the indictment, Combs engaged in violent, abusive and coercive behavior toward women for years. He is accused of organizing multi-day orgies, known as “freak offs,” in which women were forced to have sex with male sex workers, sometimes on camera. The women would also be given ketamine and other drugs and would require intravenous fluids to recover, the documents say.

Combs is also accused of punching, kicking and dragging women by their hair, among other violent acts. The documents allege that in 2011, he and an accomplice kidnapped one person at gunpoint and set another person’s car on fire with a Molotov cocktail.

If someone is found guilty, the sentence must be at least 15 years.
