Sean “Diddy” Combs has been transferred to a section of the New York City jail where convicted cryptocurrency fraudster Sam Bankman-Fried is being held, sources confirm to NBC News.

The section of the detention center is reserved for inmates requiring special protection, three sources familiar with the matter said Tuesday.

Combs, 54, was arrested last week and is being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, a federal prison notorious for violence and poor care.

Bankman-Fried, 32, is also being held in that special section of the MDC. According to the federal prosecutor in Manhattan, he was responsible for one of the largest financial frauds in history, stealing more than $8 billion, the sources said.

The unit is described as a barracks-style area that currently houses 18 to 20 inmates requiring special protection, the sources said, ranging from known suspects to individuals cooperating with investigations. It is considered a general population facility, but with additional security.

A spokesperson for the Federal Bureau of Prisons told NBC News: “For reasons of privacy, safety and security, the (FBOP) does not provide information about the conditions of confinement, including housing assignments or internal security practices for a specific inmate.”

Bankman-Fried, better known as SBF, was convicted in November and sentenced in March to 25 years in federal prison.

Prosecutors say he misused billions of dollars from customers he held on his crypto exchange, FTX, and defrauded FTX investors and backers of another entity, Alameda Research.

Bankman-Fried is appealing his conviction. In May, the court recommended that the Federal Bureau of Prisons keep him in the MDC so he can have access to his attorneys even though he is convicted, records show.

Combs was booked into the MDC last week after being arrested on a federal indictment accusing him of racketeering conspiracy, human trafficking and other charges, with a focus on the sexual abuse of women.

Combs has not yet been convicted and has pleaded not guilty, but a federal judge ordered on September 17 that he remain in jail pending trial.

According to the website of the MDC, located on 29th Street in eastern Brooklyn, it houses a total of 1,616 inmates.
