Seahawks show they can win even when they play bad football

The Seattle Seahawks are one of the few teams that have not lost in 2024.

Almost as remarkable is the way They won at home against the Miami Dolphins in Week 3. Look, what the Seahawks haven’t had is a loss. But they were also without several other pieces – incredibly important pieces – of a good football team and still won the game.

My point here is that Seattle just won a really bad football game. This is something they haven’t done much of in the last few years, and it’s an incredibly positive sign for the team going forward.

Before you say “wait a minute, have you never seen Russell Wilson, the Seahawks always won bad football! In fact, they specialized in it” – I’m not talking about the style of play. I’m talking about what the team didn’t have on Sunday, but still came away with the W.

The turnover margin

It’s been said before, but Seattle had a two-point turnover differential and still won by 21. That hadn’t happened since my dad played in leather helmets or something.

Third downs

The Seahawks were 3-for-11 on third down against Miami. That usually came with a loss last year. A big difference this season is that they now have the ability to make opposing offenses play even worse, as the Dolphins were just 1-for-12.

Not sure if you’ve ever heard of Kenneth Walker, Leonard Williams, Byron Murphy, Abe Lucas, or George Fant?

Not only are these some of the more familiar names on this team, but pay attention to where they all play. It’s never lost on me that this team keeps winning with barely a run game to speak of. Zach Charbonnet finally came alive, but that was after about five straight quarters of crap going back to last week.

And then you want to tell me that the best two defenders both went down and the team held De’Von Achane to 30 rushing yards??

Can’t run, can’t stop the run, led to a 1-5 streak in the second half of 2023. This time around, the team has enough firepower and coaching creativity on both sides to overcome.

A return game

Unlike the OT win against the New England Patriots, Seattle didn’t win on special teams. In fact, they were pretty bad. Sometimes that third phase is needed to overcome some of the shortcomings noted above. Not this week.

Not to beat a dead horse, but, Protection

It’s uncomfortable to have to keep pointing out that one or two guys are constantly on the verge of making the entire offense useless. Anthony Bradford is playing terribly and Geno Smith deserves a medal, a contract, a Pro Bowl and probably a year of coaching for the amount of pressure he continues to experience.

Discipline

Eleven penalties. Miami had 10, but Seattle’s cost more yards. Some were even real violations that actually happened!

Ultimately, fans may come to the conclusion that the Dolphins are a sub-par team and the Seahawks should be lucky to be playing them when they are so inept.

I disagree and I encourage you to go outside, have a cup of coffee and think about your attitude to life.

I see a team that isn’t even close to playing its best, and it just won an NFL game by 21 points.

Just ask the Tampa Bay Buccaneers what it feels like to play against Bo Nix.

Normally you stack four of these shortcomings and you end up with a loss. These ‘Hawks… there’s something here. Whether it’s the depth of talent, the coaching ability, the mentality, whatever you want to call it. I’m pretty excited.
