Schools across West Texas investigate threats posted on social media

ODESSA, Texas (KOSA) – Many of our viewers have reached out to share concerns over posts circling social media indicating a school shooting will take place somewhere in the Permian basin.

First Alert 7 closely followed the situation and spoke with law enforcement to learn more about how threats are shared, spread, and responded to.

Last night a post circulated on social media warning Ector County ISD students that an attack would be made at one of the district’s schools.

This post, and other similar ones sent to more area schools, were considered not credible.

In Alpine, Brewster County Sheriff’s tracked a social media post to an author in Connecticut which was then re-posted by a post author from Midland.

Law enforcement believes this out-of-state post was made to manufacture fear in West Texas communities.

In Kermit, officers began investigating a threat that was made on Friday.

The moment law enforcement is aware of a threat, it is investigated.

Law enforcement officers are prepared to work around the clock to protect the local schools.

And even after a threat is determined not to be credible, extra precautions are still taken for the safety of local students.

At this time the investigation into the original source of the threat is ongoing.
