Sask. men wore disguises during string of ATM crimes, RCMP say

Two men have been charged with a number of offences after police said a series of crimes in Saskatchewan included ATM thefts.

A 58-year-old Saskatoon man and a 49-year-old man from One Arrow First Nation have each been charged with 24 counts of burglary, 12 counts of possession of proceeds of crime and 14 counts of wearing a disguise during the commission of a crime.

The Saskatoon RCMP said in a news release Friday that the Saskatoon man was arrested on March 9 on Highway 11, south of Saskatoon.

Police said officers continued their investigation after his arrest and concluded that more than 20 incidents in Saskatchewan were linked, including six ATM thefts and “numerous” motor vehicle thefts.

One of the ATM thefts occurred on Nov. 18, 2023, when a Saskatoon RCMP officer discovered that a chain had been used to pull the machine out of a business and stolen, along with about $20,000 worth of cigarettes. Police said the ATM was later found in a field.

According to police, this was just one of many ATM thefts within the RCMP’s jurisdiction in Sask. in 2023.

On August 1, police searched a home on One Arrow First Nation and arrested the 49-year-old man.

The Saskatoon man is due in court on August 29, while the One Arrow First Nation man appeared in court earlier this week.

“Saskatchewan RCMP is uniquely equipped to connect the dots between, and investigate crimes across multiple jurisdictions,” said Insp. Ashley Levy, Saskatchewan RCMP’s Central District Operations Officer.

“That is exactly what happened in this case: the Saskatoon RCMP took the lead in investigating a possible series of crimes, with the assistance of many other RCMP detachments and specialized units.”
