Saints’ Derek Carr: ‘Not good’ after oblique injury in loss, will undergo MRI on Tuesday

After dropping a third straight game, the New Orleans Saints could be dealing with another potential loss – this one involving their quarterback. Derek Carr, who retired with an oblique injury in the fourth quarter of Monday’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs, said after the game that he would undergo an MRI on Tuesday and “we’ll figure it out.”

“Not good,” he replied when asked how he felt after the injury.

Regarding his status for the Saints’ game Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Carr said, “You know me, I’m going to do everything I can to be there.”

The severity of the injury – and its potential impact on the Davante Adams sweepstakes – remains to be seen. The Saints (2-3) are one of the teams in the mix for Adams, the Las Vegas Raiders star wide receiver who requested a trade last week. Carr and Adams have been close since their days with the Raiders and at Fresno State, and Adams has a close relationship with Saints wide receivers coach Keith Williams.

After starting their season 2-0, the last three losses have dropped the Saints to third place in the NFC South, behind the Atlanta Falcons (3-2) and Buccaneers (3-2).

Even with Carr healthy for most of Monday’s game, the Saints struggled as Carr went 18 of 28 passing for 165 yards with two touchdowns and an interception.

Carr suffered the injury with seven minutes left after taking a hit in the pocket on a failed fourth down throw. He went to the locker room and the Saints listed him as questionable to return, but he never did. Backup Jake Haener closed out the 26-13 loss.

Carr told reporters that the injury occurred on a throw and not on a specific hit.

“I would have done anything to stay there and keep fighting, but I just couldn’t,” Carr said. “So (it) sucks.”
