Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu is enjoying his versatile role as an all-round defender for the Springboks and hopes his versatility will earn him a place in the World Champions’ Round of 23.

Since making his Bok debut against Wales at Twickenham on 22 June, the four-Test playmaker has become a key member of Rassie Erasmus’ squad, showing his unpredictable talent in the home games against Ireland and Portugal.

The 22-year-old’s impact as a super sub has been impressive. His all-round skills, from attacking and defending to his perfect goal-kicking record, make him a valuable asset for South Africa.

Feinberg-Mngomezulu can play fullback, flyhalf and in midfield, and speaking of Heart FMSpeaking on DHL Stormers’ ‘Super Saturday Show’, the DHL Stormers star player believes his adaptability will strengthen his contribution to the team.

“For a while there was a lot of disdain for being a jack of all trades, but in modern rugby you have to be able to cover multiple positions and key positions (such as) 10, 12, 15 and even 13 as a defender,” he said.

“Those are the positions you want to have permanent, so I’m happy to be able to fill them in a characteristic way and we’ll have to see what happens with it.

“But you know, as long as the coaches keep supporting me and making sure I can play in these positions, then I have less doubts and I can really use that versatility.

“I hope it puts me in a good position, but we’ll see what happens. I hope this is something that will get me into the 23 in the coming period.”

With the 2024 Rugby Championship in sight, Feinberg-Mngomezulu is looking forward to matches against Australia, New Zealand and Argentina.

“I know I’m not necessarily guaranteed a place on Matchday 23 so I’m just happy to be able to see everything,” he added.

“But when those squads come through and play against those top teams that we’ve all been watching for years, and that I always get up early to watch Super Rugby play and all that sort of stuff, then that’s another dream come true.

“And then you’ve got Ireland, the All Blacks, Australia, these top countries, and that really puts you on the map. So I couldn’t be happier.

“To travel the world with the Springboks is one thing, but to play for your country in another country and defend your own flag, that is hugely exciting for me.”
