Sabrina Carpenter had a Marilyn and Madonna moment at the 2024 VMAs

Bitch, I’m Sabrina!

Tonight, Sabrina Carpenter hit the red carpet at the 2024 MTV VMAs in a dress that was literally made for a pop star.

The singer, who has seven nominations, including Artist of the Year and Song of the Year for “Espresso,” is celebrating her success in style by channeling the one and only Madonna. Carpenter and her stylist, Jared Ellner, turned to celebrity-approved archive fashion hotspot Tab Vintage for a look that was in tune with the moment, and it’s safe to say they more than nailed it. “Her stylist Jared Ellner and his team came up with a really incredible mood board,” says Tab’s owner Alexis Novak Fashion. “We sent them a set of pieces that we had along those lines and we are so happy with what she decided on!”

For the VMAs, Carpenter and Ellner chose a silver beaded Bob Mackie gown from 1991. “It was originally designed for Madonna to wear during her Academy Awards performance. It was inspired by Marilyn Monroe in Men prefer blondes and made headlines when she wore it,” says Novak.

But Madonna’s Oscars appearance wasn’t the dress’s only pop culture moment. It also appeared on the always well-dressed Fran Fine at The babysitter, thanks to costume designer Brenda Cooper. “When Brenda Cooper was looking for an Audrey Hepburn moment for the show, she went to Bob Mackie’s studio and found the sample of this piece. Madonna still has the dress that Bob Mackie made for her in her archives, but the other sample piece is the (dress) that I think we have.”
