As if the ongoing feud between Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni wasn’t enough over their film, It ends with usRyan Reynolds is apparently entering the chat with a controversy of his own. The 47-year-old actor is said to have written a “key scene” that was included in the film, according to Varietyand the timing of the rewrite may have conflicted with the 2023 Writers Guild of America strike.

The media outlet questioned the WGA about possible “guild violations” and who should be credited for the film, given that screenwriter Christy Hall’s name has been mentioned. Variety also noted that filming began on May 5, 2023, three days after the strike began. That means the script was locked down from May 2 through September 27 — not a single word could be changed by any WGA member, including Reynolds. According to a source close to the Deadpool and Wolverine star, he worked on the script in April 2023, so there were no “scabbing” violations.

Lively is the one who started this extra scandal when she said E! News about the “iconic rooftop scene” in It ends with us. “My husband actually wrote it,” she praised her husband to the entertainment news channel on Aug. 6. “Nobody knows that except you now.” The news took Hall by surprise, and she exclusively told SheKnows that she assumed it was improvised, since the film was shot during the writers’ strike.

“Nobody makes a movie alone, so it takes hundreds of people to create a village around this thing and everyone gives what they can,” she said of Reynolds’ contribution. “We all give our sacrifices, and we all do it with care, especially for something like this, and so I think it’s amazing to hear that some of those little improvised lines or what I actually assumed were improvised, may have come from Ryan. I celebrate that.”

Hall may take the news with a grain of salt, but the WGA will likely look at the timing of the rewrites, since a strike is a strike — and no union member is allowed to cross the picket line. So the controversy behind It ends with us continues, but that doesn’t stop people from seeing it in theaters. The film is a worldwide hit and the studios are sweating over the Baldoni-Lively feud — they want a sequel made.
