CASTLE ROCK, Colo. — Rory McIlroy had quite the adventure on the ninth hole at Castle Pines Golf Club in the final round of the BMW Championship on Sunday, making a broken driver and a barefoot shot.

His tee shot was wildly right, sending his ball onto a grassy slope inches from the rock and the water, forcing him to remove his shoes and socks to take off his second shot. His right foot was in the water, his left on a rock, and somehow he hit a decent shot from 146 yards onto the green, 27 feet from the hole. Two putts later, he had an improbable par.

It was a tough week for McIlroy, who threw his driver into the water on Saturday. After a wild tee shot on the ninth on Sunday, he leaned on his driver to retrieve his tee and broke the shaft.

He never competed, but he did safely qualify for the Tour Championship in Atlanta.
