Road closures announced as Tropicana Las Vegas prepares for demolition

The countdown has begun for the Tropicana Las Vegas Hotel and Casino’s final farewell as the 67-year-old piece of history will be demolished early Wednesday morning.

“It’s a piece of history, you know, like there’s movies about it on TV and stuff, and like I said, yeah, it’s history, you know? said Las Vegas resident Demitry Kanashin.

Many locals and tourists News 3 spoke to say they are trying to get one last glimpse of the iconic Tropicana before it is demolished at 2 a.m. on October 9. However, Bally’s Corporation officials say there will be no public viewing areas due to safety restrictions. Still, some hopeful watchers say they’ve already made plans.

“I already have a spot. I’m going to go here and see the implosion. I’m going to stand here in front of the MGM,” said hopeful spectator Montice Williams.

Officials with Bally’s Corporation and the Las Vegas Police Department say several road closures will go into effect starting around midnight on October 8.

These closures will impact major roadways such as Las Vegas Boulevard and Tropicana Avenue, as well as smaller surrounding streets.

“It’s the main roads here and at night it gets closed and at night people still work driving for Uber and Lyft. So yeah, it will affect traffic and stuff, and I’m sure the drivers will too,” said Kanashin, who is also a rideshare driver.

Both the Club and Paradise towers that will collapse are 23 stories tall, and to collapse the 917,400 square feet of buildings to the ground, officials say about 2,190 pounds of explosives will be detonated.

“You don’t see many buildings blown up, especially not in person. I think it’s cool. As a unique experience it would be fun to come here and watch it. I’m sure there will be plenty of other people, I’m looking forward to seeing it,” Kanashin said.

Many others who are also looking forward to the demolition say what they are most excited about is the seven-minute fireworks and drone show with 555 drones before the demolition, which will last 22 seconds.

“It’s going to be crazy because in the end that was a milestone. I liked that casino,” Williams said.

News 3 will report on the implosion on air and online.

A livestream of the ceremony and implosion will also be presented by the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA) and by Bally Live.
