Uber is working to build trust between drivers and passengers.

The taxi company will introduce new safety features, including passenger verification.

The process helps users confirm their identity. The system checks a rider’s account information against a third-party database.

If identity cannot be confirmed via this method, travelers have the option to upload a government-issued ID or other requested documentation in addition to a selfie.

Once verification is complete, travelers will receive a blue checkmark verifying their account.

Uber says the information a user uploads is protected and that drivers only see a rider’s first name, star rating, verification badge and trip details.

According to the company, the measure is not only intended to strengthen trust between drivers and passengers, but also to discourage fraudulent behavior.
