Review of Alabama’s football performance in the thriller vs. Georgia

Alabama football got it done against Georgia on Saturday. Hardly.

The Crimson Tide squandered a huge lead, falling behind the Bulldogs with 2:31 left. Then Jalen Milroe hit Ryan Williams, who made a circus catch for a long touchdown, before Zabien Brown picked off Carson Beck to seal the victory for UA.

Next, the Tide travels to Vanderbilt. To that end, here are our numbers for Saturday’s win.

Violation: B+

At first this would have been an A+ without even thinking about it. Before Georgia could blink, the Crimson Tide had a 28-point lead early in the second quarter.

Quarterback Jalen Milroe looked excellent. UA destroyed the UGA defense, but the dominance wouldn’t last.

The attack stagnated in the second half. If the Crimson Tide could have moved the ball more consistently, the Georgia comeback would have been much more difficult.

But when it really mattered, Milroe and company came along. The touchdown throw to Williams put Alabama within 41 points, which should be enough to beat just about anyone.

Certainly not a perfect performance for Alabama. But the offense gets more than a passing grade for that effort.

Defense: A-

Again, not quite perfect. But defensive coordinator Kane Wommack’s unit gave Georgia fits, especially in the first half.

Alabama made life difficult for UGA quarterback Carson Beck, picking him off three times, including Brown’s game-saving play in the final minute. Beck was also sacked three times and flagged for intentional grounding in the end zone on an Alabama safety while trying to throw from an aggressive blitz.

The comeback cannot be ignored. While Georgia had far too many chances against a tired unit, a few late stops would have put the game to bed before the freshman cornerback succeeded.

But once again, facing one of the best teams in college football, Alabama’s defense found a way to win.

Special teams: A

James Burnip is perhaps the best gambler in the country. Graham Nicholson was perfect on extra points, making his first field goal in an Alabama uniform after missing his first attempt at Wisconsin.

The punt return game also looked great. Overall a great effort from the special teams units.

General: A-

It could have been easier. But Alabama beat Georgia without Nick Saban leading the charge.

The Bulldogs battled, but Kalen DeBoer’s group responded when it mattered, advancing to the next phase of SEC play undefeated.
