Revealed: The 20 Signs Your Home Is Outdated

Hold the phone! A landline at home is now considered ‘old fashioned’ by most Britons.

It tops the list of objects and decorations that people see as a sign that a home is outdated.

Others include net curtains, DVD players and avocado-coloured bathrooms. Cottage-style kitchen units and word art on the walls, such as a ‘Live, Laugh, Love’ sign, also feature.

But 66 percent of survey respondents considered still having a landline to be the top sign that a home is outdated, even though most homes still have one.

The concept of the perfect home is changing as people become more aware of the impact their homes have on the environment, according to a report from heating and air conditioning specialist Daikin UK.

Topping the list of home must-haves are open living spaces (50 percent), solar panels (44 percent) and outdoor kitchens (14 percent).

A vegetable garden (34 percent) and a home office (32 percent) also topped the list of most desired amenities for modern Britons.

A kitchen island (35 percent), a smart energy meter (35 percent) and LED lighting (35 percent) are all considered essential in a modern home, along with underfloor heating (32 percent) and an integrated music system (25 percent).

Eight in ten (81 percent) of the 2,000 respondents wished their home was more environmentally friendly, while 30 percent would like a garage or allocated parking space.

Interior designer Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen has partnered with Daikin UK to highlight the importance of sustainable climate solutions for the home.

The 59-year-old Changing Rooms star said the research “shows how the demands we place on our homes are changing”. She added: “People are not just thinking decoratively, but also environmentally consciously when it comes to how they decorate their homes – and what it says to others.

‘Many of the ‘modern must-haves’, such as heat pumps, are thoughtfully designed and can be seamlessly integrated into homes without compromising style.’

Iain Bevan, director of new residential developments at Daikin UK, the organisation that commissioned the research, said: ‘Installing environmentally friendly heating and energy solutions in your home can make it more attractive to buyers and increase its value.

‘Research shows that a home with an EPC rating of F to C can increase in value by an average of 15 per cent. That’s almost £56,267 when you look at the average asking price in the country.’
