The 2024 Summer Paralympics in Paris are underway and the US wheelchair basketball team played its first game against Spain on Thursday.

The Games are a follow-up to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, which were scheduled to be held from 26 July 2024 to 11 August 2024. The Paralympic Games will take place at many of the same venues that hosted the Olympic Games, while other venues will be converted for the Paralympic Games.

Here’s what you need to know about wheelchair basketball at the Paralympic Games:

The men’s wheelchair basketball team played its first game of the 2024 Paralympics against Spain. Team USA left the court victorious after Thursday’s game ended 66-56.

When will the men’s wheelchair basketball team play at the 2024 Paralympic Games?

After the victory, Team USA will play a match against the Netherlands on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. (local time).

What are Wheelchair Basketball Paralympics?

According to the International Wheelchair Basketball Federation website, wheelchair basketball consists of two teams of five players and seven substitutes. The goal is to throw the ball into the other team’s basket.

“The game consists of four periods of ten minutes,” the website states. “If the score is tied at the end of playing time in the fourth period, the game will continue for an additional five-minute period or for as many additional five-minute periods as are necessary to break the tie.”

The women’s wheelchair basketball team will play its first game against Germany on Friday at 10:00 am.

When are the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games?

The 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris began on Wednesday with the opening ceremony and will last until Sunday, September 8.

The Games will feature approximately 4,400 athletes from around the world, competing in 549 medal events across 22 different sports. Many of the events will be held at the same venues that hosted the athletes at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. For example, wheelchair basketball will take place at the Bercy Arena, the venue for the men’s and women’s basketball competitions at the Paris Olympics.

The medals also resemble those from the Paris 2024 Olympics, complete with a piece of original iron from the Eiffel Tower. They are also designed to be distinguished by touch and feature engraving and Braille.

These are the first Summer Paralympics to be held in France. The event has already led to positive changes in terms of accessibility, with the city of Paris making changes to make public transport more accessible.

The 2024 Paris Paralympic Games will be broadcast across NBC networks, while many events will take place on USA Network and CNBC.

The Paralympics can also be streamed on Peacock, NBCOlympics.com, the official Paralympics YouTube channel and the International Paralympic Committee website.
