Republican calls media coverage of Trump’s Arlington visit, Afghanistan withdrawal ‘despicable’

Sen. Markwayne Mullin (R-Oklahoma) on Tuesday slammed the left-wing media for their coverage of former President Trump’s recent visit to Arlington National Cemetery and the Biden administration’s handling of the withdrawal from Afghanistan.

During an appearance on “Fox & Friends,” Mullin, who noted that he was “intimately involved” in withdrawing Americans from Afghanistan, said that Trump has “had nothing but support” for him from day one.

“(The Biden administration) knows this is such a stain on their face, they want nothing to do with it. They’re going to do whatever they can to get the news out of it, and what’s despicable and disgusting is the left-wing media is constantly covering for them and instead of praising President Trump for being there and honoring these 12 soldiers, they started making a big deal out of it and making a big show of it and saying how disrespectful it was,” he said.

Trump joined Gold Star families at Virginia National Cemetery on Monday for a wreath-laying ceremony in honor of the 13 service members killed in the Abbey Gate terrorist attack outside Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul on August 26, 2021.

Mullin stressed that it is not disrespectful to honor fallen soldiers or recall the sacrifices made by thousands of Americans in Afghanistan.

The families of the 13 service members have said they have not heard from Biden or Harris despite trying to contact the administration. They have also defended Trump’s attendance.

“What is despicable and abhorrent is that we have a president and a vice president who won’t even acknowledge their disastrous withdrawal, which has cost thousands and thousands of lives and continues to cost lives,” Mullin continued.

Appearing on NBC’s “Meet the Press” program on Sunday, Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Arkansas) criticized President Biden and Harris for ignoring the families of fallen soldiers.

During the call, NBC’s Kristen Welker claimed that Vice President Kamala Harris attended the dignified transfer of American troops killed during the withdrawal from Afghanistan.

NBC posted a correction on the show’s X account after the show.

“On our broadcast this morning, we falsely implied that both President Biden and Vice President Harris attended the dignified transfer of 13 U.S. service members killed during the withdrawal from Afghanistan,” NBC wrote on its “Meet the Press” X account.

“Biden was present, but Harris was not,” the statement said.
