Red Wings postpone the start time of the season opener due to the Tigers’ ALDS game

Even in hockey-crazed Detroit, the season opener for the Red Wings can wait.

The team announced Tuesday that Thursday’s scheduled season opener against the Pittsburgh Penguins, scheduled for a 7 p.m. ET start, will be postponed by an hour because the Tigers are at home playing in the American League Division Series for the first time since 2014.

The Red Wings’ home at Little Caesars Arena is less than a mile from Comerica Park, where the Tigers will host the Cleveland Guardians at 6:08 PM ET in Game 4 of their series, and the postponed hockey start will provide an opportunity so that traffic can flow between events.

“With a high volume of traffic expected in downtown Detroit that evening, fans are encouraged to arrive early and allow themselves extra time by reserving parking in advance,” the Red Wings said in a statement.
