JACKSON, Wyo. – The National Weather Service office in Riverton, WY (NWS) has issued a red flag warning affecting Teton County, along with several other counties in Wyoming, meaning critical fire conditions are imminent.

Fremont, Park, Lincoln and Sublette counties are also affected, along with counties in the eastern and central parts of the state. The warning is in effect on Wednesday, October 2 at 12:00 PM to 7:00 PM.

According to NWS, low humidity combined with unusually warm temperatures and strong gusty winds can cause erratic fire behavior. According to the warning, wind gusts can reach up to 60 kilometers per hour.

“Any form of burning is strongly discouraged!” NWS posted this on its website on Wednesday.

Those in areas covered by the warning should avoid starting fires if possible. If not, make sure the fire is lit in a safe area where sparks cannot spread to nearby fuels, and make sure the fire is extinguished and cold before leaving. Follow the tips to stay fire safe.

This weather could negatively impact the two wildfires burning in the Bridger-Teton National Forest: the Fish Creek Fire and the Pack Trail Fire. On Tuesday, the Forest Service noted that the Fish Creek Fire had reached 25,325 acres and Pack Trail Fire had reached 18,525 acres. Stay tuned for further updates.
