Rainbow Warriors Host UCLA on Network TV

HONOLULU – The University of Hawai’i football team hosts UCLA in a rare network television appearance on Saturday, August 31, at the Clarence TC Ching Complex. Kickoff is at 1:30 p.m. and the game will be televised on CBS. The Rainbow Warriors (1-0) are coming off a 35-14 season-opening win over Delaware State, while the Bruins (0-0) are making their debut as members of the newly expanded Big Ten Conference.

Promotions on match days:
A celebration of culture and diversity with “Island Style Day.” All fans are asked to wear their favorite green UH jersey to turn the stands green in a show of unity for a national television audience on CBS. All fans are encouraged to bring ti leaves for good luck, while ti leaf rally towels will be handed out to the student section. Keep your eyes peeled for a clear bag giveaway at Gate 2 from game sponsor Bank of Hawai’i.

GAME STORYLINES

  • UH and UCLA will play in Honolulu for the first time since 1939.
  • UCLA has won all four meetings in the series, including the most recent game, 44-10, in the 2021 season opener at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California.
  • The only meeting in Honolulu, on January 2, 1939, the Bruins won 32-7 in the Pineapple Bowl at the old Honolulu Stadium.
  • The teams will play each other again in 2027 (Honolulu) and 2028 (Pasadena).
  • It’s UCLA’s first game as a member of the new 18-team Big Ten conference.
  • Hawaii has an all-time record of 14-45 (.237) against current members of the Big Ten.
  • UH has lost its last 14 games against current Big Ten members. (9 of those were against new members USC, UCLA, Oregon, Washington)
  • UH’s last win over a current Big Ten team was against Washington in 2007. Its last win over a Big Ten opponent was against Purdue in 2006 in Honolulu.
  • UH’s all-time record in the month of August is 8-10 (Division I era).
  • UH will make its ninth network appearance, including its second ever on CBS. Hawai’i’s only other previous CBS appearance was against San Diego State, Oct. 1, 1983 in Honolulu, which ended in a 27-27 tie.
  • UH’s last network television appearance was against USC on FOX in 2012. Its last home game on network television was against Fresno State in 2005 on ABC.
  • Hawaii has lost its last 10 games on national television, including 13 of the last 14 since the start of the 2021 season.
  • UH receiver Tamatoa Mokiao-Atimalala’s younger brother is UCLA receiver Titus Mokiao-Atimalala. The brothers attended Campbell High School in ‘Ewa Beach, O’ahu, with the latter playing one season at UCF before transferring to UCLA.
  • UCLA associate head coach Brian Norwood was a four-year letterwinner at cornerback and safety at Hawai’i (1984-87). UCLA defensive coordinator Ikaika Malloe coached one season at UH (2008), where he served as special teams coordinator and defensive tackles coach on Greg McMackin’s staff.
