Rachel Maddow interrupts live interview with Tim Walz to tell him about Taylor Swift support

Tim Walz apparently discovered that he and Kamala Harris had Taylor Swift’s support during a live interview on Tuesday night.

The Minnesota governor responded on MSNBC to Harris’ first debate with Donald Trump when host Rachel Maddow said she had been sent something while they were talking. “I don’t think you’re aware of this,” Maddow said. “But this was just posted online by a woman you may have heard of named Taylor Swift.”

Maddow then read the statement Swift had posted on her Instagram account, along with a photo of her with Benjamin Button, one of her three cats. The pop music icon wrote that she was concerned about AI-generated images portraying her as endorsing Trump’s campaign, and clarified that she would in fact be voting for Harris.

Swift also used the post to say she was “encouraged and impressed” by Walz — highlighting, in part, his support for “a woman’s right to her own body” — while taking a shot at Trump’s VP pick, J.D. Vance, by closing the post with, “Childless cat lady.”

As Maddow began reading the text, Walz beamed as a chyron appeared on the screen that read, “TAYLOR SWIFT SUPPORTS HARRIS FOR PRESIDENT.” He also placed his hand over his heart in a gesture of gratitude as Maddow read the line that made it clear Swift would be voting for him and Harris.

“I need to hear your response to this, Mr. Governor,” Maddow said after reading the statement.

“Wow!” Walz said. “All of those things — I’m incredibly grateful to Taylor Swift, first of all. I say that as a cat owner, as a fellow cat owner.”

“Look, Swifties, you heard it,” he continued. “We know it’s there. That was eloquent and it was clear. And that’s the kind of courage that we need in America, to stand up. We’ve seen it with those Republicans who were at the DNC. We’ve seen it with women who want to keep their own personal lives personal, but are forced to go there because they almost died because they couldn’t get an abortion during a pregnancy.”

“And now you have someone like Taylor Swift making that very clear,” Walz said. “This would be the opportunity, Swifties. Kamala Harris dot com—get over there, lend us a hand, get this thing rolling!”
