Powerful thunderstorms in the northeast bring intense lightning and damaging wind gusts

NEW YORK – The extreme weather that swept across parts of the Midwest and Great Lakes region this week also took aim at the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast on Wednesday.

According to the FOX Forecast Center, the severe thunderstorms that developed on Wednesday were all the result of extreme heat and a cold front that moved across the region during the afternoon and evening.

The National Weather Service issued multiple severe thunderstorm warnings as storms raged across areas of eastern Pennsylvania and New Jersey, just south of New York City.

In a video shared by FOX Weather meteorologist Ari Sarsalari, a thunderstorm was seen producing bright lightning and strong winds, while heavy rain fell.

Fortunately, there were not too many reports of damage from the storms.

According to the National Weather Service, there was a 58 mph (93 km/h) wind gust north of Readington, New Jersey, and another strong gust in the area, which knocked down trees.
