Police chase on US 75 leaves woman injured, murder suspect shot dead in Dallas

Update:

07:47 AM, September 17, 2024: Revised with additional information from police.

A man charged with murder in Kaufman County led police on a chase through Richardson and Dallas on Monday before fatally shooting himself, officials said.

The front seat passenger was hospitalized after being shot multiple times, and three children, ages 5, 15 and 17, were in the back seat at the time of the chase and shooting.

Authorities have not released the man’s identity or information about the murder investigation.

Shortly after 3:30 p.m., an arson investigator with the Richardson Fire Department alerted officers to a vehicle connected to a homicide in Kaufman County, according to a Richardson police news release. Officers attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver accelerated.

The chase continued into Dallas, where the driver fired at officers from the moving vehicle in the 13600 block of Esperanza Drive, and a Richardson officer returned fire, police said.

It is not immediately clear how many shots were fired by the man or the officer.

The vehicle came to rest on the southbound Frontage Road in the 13100 block of North Central Expressway. None of the children were injured, police said.

Officers deployed a drone and ballistic shields as they approached the vehicle, finding the man with a self-inflicted gunshot wound and the woman who had been shot by the driver, police said.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene. The woman was taken to Medical City Dallas hospital in critical condition.

The officer was placed on administrative leave pending an investigation into the shooting, as is department policy.

Dallas police have been leading the criminal investigation since the Dallas shooting. The Dallas County District Attorney’s Office is also investigating the incident, which is standard for officer-involved shootings.
