Police are stepping up patrols at American places of worship due to the attack on Israel and the start of the Jewish holidays

Police departments across the US are stepping up patrols of Jewish communities and places of worship amid Iran’s latest attack on Israel, the start of the Jewish High Holidays on Wednesday – and the upcoming one-year anniversary of the October 7 Hamas terror attack .

Officials told CNN that the increased police presence at key locations comes out of an abundance of caution as a deterrent and was not based on specific threats. Despite the lack of known credible threats, law enforcement officials have described the potential for violence by so-called “lone wolf” attackers as one of their most serious concerns in what they have described as a heightened threat environment.

The increased patrols come as Rosh Hashanah – the first of the high holidays and considered the Jewish New Year – begins at sunset on Wednesday and ends at nightfall on Friday. Next week, Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar, will be celebrated from sunset on Friday until nightfall on Saturday.

The NYPD adopted an increased patrol posture on Monday, a law enforcement source told CNN, which is expected to be maintained for the next two weeks.

NYPD will also work with state police for explosive detection missions at bridges and tunnels, and helicopter units will be used for radiation detection, the source said.

Los Angeles Police Department leaders recently participated in a safety town hall with leaders of Southern California’s Jewish community to discuss increasing patrols during the religious holidays. The LAPD has routinely increased its presence in both Jewish and Muslim places of worship based on the unrest in the Middle East.

Last week at City Hall, the LAPD said its patrols would include an increased number of officers, command post vehicles and horseback troops. The meeting was aimed at reassuring members of the Jewish community, many of whom have expressed security concerns after an anti-Semitic attack in the city last year in which two men were shot as they left a Jewish synagogue by a man on Monday was sentenced to 35 years. in federal prison.

Chicago police said the department plans to “pay special attention to houses of worship” and will monitor all activity. “While there is no actionable information at this time, we will have an increased police presence to ensure the city’s faith communities are not only safe, but feel safe,” the department said in a statement.

Asked about Tuesday’s attack on Israel, a Miami Beach police spokesman said it had “increased our uniformed presence in the city to ensure public safety.”

Philadelphia police told CNN that they were closely monitoring the situation in Israel “and assessing the potential impact on our local community. Out of an abundance of caution, we have taken proactive measures, including increased patrols around local Jewish and Muslim places of worship and community centers, to ensure the safety of all community members.”

In addition to law enforcement agencies, national Jewish security organizations have been working to identify potential threats to houses of worship in the US.

“What we have previously told Jewish institutions is that there is no credible threat to the Jewish community in the United States at this time,” said Oren Segal, vice president of the Anti-Defamation League’s Center on Extremism, and adds. recommends that places of worship remain open during the holidays.

“However, given the heightened tensions and increased risk to the community at this time, we recommend that institutions review and implement a range of safety measures and procedures,” Segal said.
