Penn State football-West Virginia weather updates after delay

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — The new and improved Penn State football offense was getting going in the season opener, until a weather delay shut everything down.

Thunderstorms with possible lightning from the west forced the game to be stopped at halftime. Top-10 Penn State’s mixed but impressive start against the West Virginia Mountaineers at Milan Puskar Stadium.

The match was stopped a few minutes after half-time after a lightning strike was reported nearby. The stadium was evacuated and most sought shelter under the stands.

There is no known resumption time yet.

Penn State looks set to pull away, holding a 20-6 lead at halftime, led by the Drew Allar-Tre Wallace connection on offense and the dynamic safety combination of Jaylen Reed and KJ Winston on defense.

Allar completed 8 of 13 passes in the first half for 199 yards and three touchdowns — nearly all of the work going to the finally healthy Wallace. The junior wideout hauled in five of those passes for 117 yards and two scores.

On defense, Reed and Winston each had eight tackles in the first half. Reed was the best defender on the field with a tackle for loss, two pass breakups and a fumble recovery.

Penn State’s Latest Weather Delay?

That was in 2017 at Michigan State. Lightning strikes delayed the eventual loss in the final game against the Spartans by three hours and 22 minutes.

2:30 pm: Heavy rain washes over Milan Puskar Stadium. Stadium announcer reveals match restart won’t be for at least 30 minutes.
