play

Jacoby Brissett was scheduled to be the starting quarterback for the New England Patriots for their Week 1 game against the Bengals on September 8 at Paycor Stadium in Cincinnati.

Brissett suffered a right shoulder injury Sunday night during the Pats’ final preseason game against the Washington Commanders.

In the first quarter, Commanders defensive lineman KJ Henry was unblocked and made a big hit for a sack by Brissett. The QB landed on his left shoulder and Henry landed on Brissett’s right shoulder.

Brissett remained in the game but made a face during pass attempts and was replaced by rookie Drake Maye for the ensuing series.

Brissett finished the game completing 2 of 4 passes for 19 yards.

Brissett, 31, was drafted by the Pats in 2016. He played for the Indianapolis Colts, Miami Dolphins, Cleveland Browns and Washington.

Brissett has started two games against the Bengals. He led the Browns to a 32-13 win over Cincinnati in 2022. Brissett and the Colts lost in Cincinnati in 2017.

The Patriots’ offensive coordinator is former Bengals quarterbacks coach Alex Van Pelt. The Bengals promoted current OC Dan Pitcher to QBs coach when Van Pelt left in 2020.
