Patriots’ Jerod Mayo won’t commit to Jacoby Brissett after Jets failure

Patriots quarterback Jacoby Brissett struggled to get going on offense against the Jets on Thursday and his time as a starter may already be over.

No. 3 overall pick Drake Maye made his NFL debut during the garbage time of the Jets’ 24-3 win and is eager to take over.

New England head coach Jerod Mayo declined to say whether Brissett would remain as the starter after falling to 1-2.

“I don’t know,” Mayo told reporters when asked about a possible change. “We talk about it every week… we meet as a coaching staff.”

Maye had his moments as a cleanup man, rushing for an 11-yard first down and driving the Patriots to the red zone before time ran out.

However, Maye had two sacks on his one drive, one of which came on the final play.

Amazon Prime commentator Al Michaels said Maye took a “welcome to the league hit” on his third play, when he was crushed after running one yard.

“I thought it was too good an opportunity for him to go there and get some experience,” Mayo said, according to Mass Live.

Mayo previously hesitated to name a starter heading into Week 1. He told reporters that Maye had surpassed Brissett in contention for the job after training camp but gave the veteran the starting job anyway.

“What I can say is this is a real competition … and I would say Drake has surpassed Jacoby at this point,” Mayo said before naming Brissett the starting player to begin the season.

The offensive line issues are a clear concern that could impact the Patriots’ decision to make changes in the future.

Patriots quarterbacks have been sacked 11 times in three games this season, including seven on Thursday night.

Brissett, however, is not exactly a star player as a starter. In terms of average yards per pass attempt (5.1), he is in the bottom five and scores only 13 points per game (third worst).
