Pakistan Cricket Board considering appointment of Waqar Younis as director of cricket affairs | Cricket News

NEW DELHI: Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Mohsin Naqvi is considering appointing former captain Waqar Younis as the new director of cricket affairs. The move is aimed at using Younis’ vast experience to oversee cricket-related activities, decentralise management and ensure that specialists handle cricket-related issues.

A source within the PCB indicated that Naqvi is inclined to follow the example of other national cricket associations by putting a former player in charge of cricket affairs.

“Waqar Younis is a top candidate to take full charge of men’s cricket, including working with the two foreign head coaches, national selection committees and domestic cricket departments,” the source said, as quoted by PTI.

Naqvi envisages decentralising cricket management so that experts can deal with cricket-specific issues rather than just administrative officials. This approach would see international cricket schedules overseen by the Director of Cricket.

To expand

The source added: “Naqvi does not want to centralise all powers. He wants to decentralise things, especially when it comes to cricket issues. In future, even international cricket schedules and issues would be overseen by the Director of Cricket.”

Currently, Naqvi is concentrating on the preparations for the Champions Trophy and other administrative decisions within the board. He believes that specialists should handle cricket matters rather than purely administrative staff. “As Federal Minister of Home Affairs, Naqvi feels it is fair that all cricket matters are handled by specialists and not just by people in the board,” the source explained.

Waqar Younis, now 52 and living in Australia with his family, was previously Pakistan’s head coach and bowling coach. He is still open to lending his services to the national team, making him a suitable candidate for the role of Director of Cricket Affairs.

The potential appointment would give Younis the authority to appoint other former players for assistance, ensuring a thorough and expert approach to the administration of cricket in Pakistan.
