OU Football vs Tennessee Live Score Updates from Sooners-Volunteers

(This article has been updated with new information.)

NORMAN — The last time OU and Tennessee faced off was a classic.

In 2015, the Sooners trailed 17-3 after three quarters until Baker Mayfield showed the magic he’s known for, hitting Sterling Shepard for a touchdown in the final minute of regulation to tie the game. He did it again in the second overtime.

“The atmosphere was just amazing,” former Sooners cornerback Zack Sanchez said this week.

Sanchez’s interception ended the match.

When OU and Tennessee face off on Saturday, the teams will look very different.

Josh Heupel, the last OU quarterback to win a national title, is the Volunteers’ head coach. Former OU quarterback Joey Halzle is Heupel’s quarterback coach/offensive coordinator.

Saturday also marks the Sooners’ first-ever SEC game.

“It brings a lot of extra excitement,” Sanchez said. “Something is going to be shown on Saturday.

“I have complete confidence in our guys and I think this defense will show the country exactly how good we are.”

Lewis Carter just played his best game as a Sooner.

On third-and-6 from the Tennessee 47-yard line, Vols quarterback Nico Iamaleava hit a lateral strike to the right to Squirrel White.

Carter was there.

Carter hit White hard, causing him to lose 7 yards. Tennessee was also assessed a personal foul penalty on the play, putting the Volunteers on fourth-and-28.

Jackson Arnold had a rough second series.

First, the Sooners’ quarterback was taken down for a loss of 2 yards early in the drive, and then he was taken down on second down by Tennessee’s Tyre West for a loss of 4 yards.

Arnold recovered and passed to Jake Roberts on third down, but the Sooners needed to punt and gave Tennessee the ball at its own 43.

The Sooners’ defense passed its first test.

After the offense lost the ball on downs, OU’s defense was given a three-and-out.

Robert Spears-Jennings and Peyton Bowen stepped up to stop Tennessee’s Dylan Sampson at the line of scrimmage on third down, forcing the Volunteers to punt.

OU looked like it was off to a monstrous start.

On the third play of the game, Tennessee defensive end James Pearce Jr. was offside and Sooners quarterback Jackson Arnold responded by throwing a 76-yard touchdown pass to Brenen Thompson.

But officials stopped the play. Although Pearce was given a penalty, Tennessee’s cornerback made contact with an OU receiver, making it a dead-ball penalty.

The Sooners picked up a first down on the next play, with an 18-yard pass to Deion Burks, but the drive stalled after that.

Brent Venables decided to go fourth-and-2 in midfield, but Arnold’s pass was incomplete, giving the Volunteers the ball.

Tennessee coach Josh Heupel was honored Saturday night before facing OU at Gaylord Family — Oklahoma Memorial Stadium.

“Welcome back Josh Heupel,” the video board read, along with a photo of Heupel after leading the Sooners to a national championship victory over Florida State to close the 2000 season.

In addition, there was a live video of Heupel during the warm-up.

Heupel tapped his heart when he was addressed over the loudspeakers and received loud applause from the audience.

If pre-game warmups are anything to go by, it appears Branson Hickman is ready to return as OU’s center.

Hickman and fellow offensive lineman Jake Taylor were listed on the SEC’s final pregame availability report as game-time decisions, though Taylor primarily watched the warmup.

However, Hickman worked with the starting offensive line, with Heath Ozaeta and Febechi Nwaiwu at guards and Jacob Sexton and Michael Tarquin at the tackle positions.

Wide receiver Nic Anderson appears set to make his season debut after missing the first three games due to injury.

Cheetah Kendel Dolby, who missed last week’s game, also looks set to return to the starting lineup.

MEANS MORE

This is why OU joined the SEC, for these types of games played at home. The Sooners’ crowd is on edge, making this a fairly tough road game for Tennessee. Jackson Arnold seems like the right fit and the Sooners keep things interesting, but Tennessee’s offense rolls.
