OT Trent Williams, 49ers finalize new contract with $48M in guaranteed money to end holdout

Trent Williams traveled to San Francisco to agree to a new deal with the 49ers, his agency reported Tuesday morning on X.

There he told reporters that the deal was “virtually done.”

“Safety. It’s a volatile league,” Williams said of his goal to hold on. “A guy my size, my age — I thought safety was important.”

According to his agency, Elite Loyalty Sports, Williams’ new deal is for three years and $82.66 million. It includes a $25.7 million signing bonus and $48 million guaranteed at signing.

The deal ensures that the 11-time Pro Bowl offensive tackle will be in uniform for the Niners’ Week 1 game against the New York Jets on Monday night, ending Williams’ refusal to accompany the team for the entirety of training camp.

According to ESPN’s Nick Wagoner, the 36-year-old, who was the NFL’s leading pass-blocking tackle with a 95.8 percent winning percentage, has been fined more than $4 million for missing practice and the team’s three preseason games.

The reason Williams is holding off is that he has three years left on his contract, but no more guaranteed money. That’s part of a six-year, $138.1 million contract he signed in March 2021.

Williams getting a new deal would end the second contract dispute 49ers general manager John Lynch has faced this offseason. Wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk sat out training camp and was nearly traded before agreeing to a new four-year, $120 million contract last week.

While he didn’t sit out, Christian McCaffrey also had no guaranteed remaining money this offseason. He eventually signed a new two-year, $38 million extension in June, with $24 million guaranteed.

In addition to his double-digit Pro Bowl appearances, Williams is also a three-time First Team All-Pro and a Second Team All-Pro in 2015. He was the fourth overall pick out of Oklahoma in 2010 and is entering his 14th NFL season. He began his career with Washington and has been with the 49ers since a trade in 2020.
