DETROIT – Jared Goff has set an NFL record for most passes without putting a ball on the grass. He finished with more touchdowns catches (one) then incompleteness (zero). He also threw for two scores, including a 70-yarder to Jameson Williams that broke Seattle’s back and an 8-yard toe-tapper to Amon-Ra St. Brown that put the game on ice.

It was a perfect game, even if the NFL’s byzantine quarterback ratings said otherwise.

“Well, I just gave the game ball to someone else,” the head coach said. “So I feel terrible now.”

It was one of those nights for the Detroit Lions offense in a 42-29 win against the Seattle Seahawks on Monday Night Football. There were just so many things going right. Yes, Jamo broke loose – really loose – for a 70-yard touchdown catch. He also delivered some huge blocks and earned the first game ball of his young career. And then there’s St. Brown, who tapped a half-yard for a late touchdown that helped cement the victory. David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs combined for 118 yards and three touchdowns. Even the offensive line, down the road from the Pro Bowl center, forcing two guys into new positions, was running against Seattle for most of the night.

Game balls could have gone many ways. But on a night when a lot went right, it was Goff who shined brightest, completing all 18 passes for 298 yards and two touchdowns. It was a historic effort – nearly doubling Kurt Warner’s previous record for most passes without an incompletion (10) – but somehow no one seemed to know it came from the field. Even Goff didn’t realize his achievement until he spoke to an NFL Network reporter coming off the field.

“I had no idea he even went 18 for 18,” St. Brown said. “So after the game, as I’m dabbing everyone, I’m doing NFL Network, they ask me a few questions, and she says, ‘You know, Jared didn’t put the ball on the ground. How does that feel?’ In my head I’m thinking, ‘I know he didn’t mess around. You mean he didn’t put the ball on the ground? And so after the game I come in here, and I look at my phone and it says he went 18 for 18, without any incompletion. I look at him and say, ‘Bro, didn’t you have any imperfections?’ I’m like, damn, I didn’t even know.

Again, those kind of nights for the Lions offense. Obviously, we expected this from Detroit this season. That unit was top five the past two seasons and brought back almost everyone this season, including Ben Johnson. But they disappointed through the first three games, struggling to put four quarters together and never scoring more than 20 points in regulation.

Too much talent for that kind of thing.

Even Ben Johnson knew something had to be done.

“We’re just too talented as a group not to have more production and more points than what we’ve had,” Johnson said Friday. “It’s only a matter of time before we break through.”

Three days later that was the case. They went three-and-out on their first series, then rattled off five touchdowns on the next six series. It was a masterclass in playcalling, beating Seattle to the ground, then going over the top when the defense started to collapse, and then throwing a haymaker when Seattle least expected it.

The piece was called ‘Alcatraz’. It’s been in the playbook for a few years and they even called it a few times last year, although the defense looked wrong and Goff switched to running plays both times. Then on Monday Night Football, Goff walked to the line of scrimmage and St. Brown nodded knowingly.

It was on.

Goff threw the ball to St. Brown, working from left to right, then leaked back to the left and caught a perfect seven-yard pass for the touchdown. It was the first TD catch of his career.

“And I say all the way back to 7 years old, I think this is my first,” Goff said.

Goff has been far from perfect this season, though the resurgent defense still helped Detroit win two of its first three games. When the defense was down three starters against the high-powered Seahawks, Goff delivered one of the most perfect performances by a quarterback in league history, lifting the Lions to a 3-1 start heading into halftime.

They have the second-best record in the NFC and have yet to get four quarters together as a team.

Scary, huh?

“I think we can do that every week with the guys we have in this offense,” St. Brown said. “If we can just stay sharp and do our job for most of the game, I think the sky is the limit for us. We have some guys that can make plays.”

No doubt. And when they finally reach their goal, there’s no telling how good this team can be.
