COLUMBUS, Ohio – With a roster stacked from top to bottom, the Ohio State football team enters the 2024 season with the same mentality: return to the top of college football and end the bloody battle against their hated rival.

Ryan Day enters his sixth season at the helm of the Buckeyes with a 56-8 record. Coach Ryan Day’s seat is getting warmer as the losses to Michigan mount and NCAA championship hopes fade.

In contrast to the slow start against Akron, Ohio State defeated Western Michigan 56-0 and performed excellently from start to finish.

The Buckeyes totaled 683 yards and 30 first downs in the carnage. Ohio State led 35-0 at halftime. The starters were changed late in the third quarter.

Senior quarterback Will Howard completed his first 10 passes and went 18 of 26 for 292 yards with one touchdown, while also scoring a rushing score. Freshman Julian Sayin went 2 of 2 for 62 yards and one touchdown. Junior Devin Brown went 5 of 5 for 57 yards in his short stint.

Freshman wide receiver Jeremiah Smith picked up where he left off after a phenomenal debut with five receptions for 119 yards and one touchdown, highlighted by a 7-yard catch that turned into a 70-yard blitz to paydirt. He has three touchdowns in two games.

Senior Emeka Egbuka had five receptions for 98 yards, while junior tight end Bennett Chistian hauled in a touchdown reception of 55 yards.

The 1-2 punch of junior running back Quinshon Judkins and senior back TreVeyon Henderson delivered a powerful performance, combining for 19 carries and 174 yards with four touchdowns. Judkins and Henderson each had a pair of carries, with Judkins leading the way with 108 yards.

Freshman James Peoples added his second touchdown in as many games with 10 carries and 51 yards.

Ohio State’s defense was nothing short of sensational. They allowed the Broncos just 99 total yards of offense, including just five yards in the entire second half. Western Michigan mustered just six first downs on the night.

Broncos senior quarterback Hayden Wolff was limited to just 8 of 15 for 71 yards. Their rushing attack was limited to just 28 yards, with their longest gains coming from a pair of 8-yard runs.

Junior cornerback Davison Igbinosun, sophomore safety Caleb Downs, senior defensive tackle Ty Hamilton and junior safety Sonny Styles led the team with four tackles each. Senior linebacker Cody Simon and senior defensive end Jack Sawyer each had a sack.

The only mishaps that night were two sacks allowed by Ohio State’s offensive line and two fumbles by senior receiver Jayden Ballard and sophomore receiver Brandon Inniss, both of which were recovered by the Buckeyes.

A look at the 2024 Ohio State Buckeyes

After a frustrating quarterback conundrum last season, Ohio State will have a number of quarterbacks expected to compete for the starting role this time around. Will Howard, a graduate transfer from Kansas State, is the favorite, while redshirt sophomore Devin Brown and freshman transfer Julian Sayin are likely next in line. The roster also includes redshirt freshman Lincoln Kienholz and freshman Air Noland.

The departure of running back Dallan Hayden to Colorado was quickly resolved when the backfield was bolstered with the addition of Ole Miss junior transfer running back Quinshon Judkins. Redshirt junior TreVeyon Henderson returns in what could be the best 1-2 running back punch in college football. Henderson has racked up 156 carries for 926 yards with 11 touchdowns. For the Rebels, Judkins has racked up 271 carries for 1,158 yards and 15 touchdowns.

The rest of the backfield is also doing well, with two playmaking freshmen James Peoples and Sam Williams-Dixon expected to find their roles.

With nine returning starters, the defense is expected to be one of the fiercest in the country, led by dominant redshirt juniors JT Tuimoloau and Jack Sawyer. Seniority is also on display with nose tackle Ty Hamilton, defensive tackle Tyleik Williams and middle linebacker Cody Simon, while redshirt junior cornerback Denzel Burke remains a solid threat. Redshirt sophomore linebacker CJ Hicks and sensational transfer sophomore safety Caleb Downs will be key players moving forward this season.

The Buckeyes allowed just 11.23 points per game last season, trailing only Michigan. The stars are back on the court.

Speaking of stars, the receivers have reloaded from co-offensive coordinator Brian Hartline’s treasure trove of star power. Freshman Jeremiah Smith is expected to be a natural, joining sophomore Carnell Tate and veteran redshirt junior Emeka Egbuka.

Senior Gee Scott Jr. returns at tight end, while sophomore Jelani Thurman looks to make a move at the position.

Sophomore receiver Brandon Inniss, who could see special teams time, is also on many defensive radars while redshirt junior Jayden Ballard will try to find a significant role on the stacked roster. If it’s Howard under center, he’ll inherit the maturing gold.

What will the offense look like under offensive coordinator Chip Kelly? The Buckeyes averaged 30.54 points per game last season. The team collected 50 touchdowns.

Offensive line coach Justin Frye’s offensive line is a mix of experience and development.

The Buckeyes’ offensive line will be manned by Alabama graduate transfer Seth McLaughlin in the middle, while redshirt junior Donovan Jackson and redshirt junior transfer Josh Simmons will provide an experienced left wing. The right side will feature redshirt sophomore Tegra Tshabola and the experienced leadership of redshirt senior Josh Fryar. Keep an eye on sophomore right guard Luke Montgomery for some impactful playing time.

Junior Jayden Fielding returns as kicker after leading Ohio State with 97 points. He also made 49-of-50 extra point attempts and 16-of-20 (80%) of his field goal attempts.
