Officials identify 4 victims killed in Apalachee HS shooting

Authorities have identified the two 14-year-old students and two teachers who were shot dead in a horrific massacre at a Georgia high school Wednesday morning.

Teenagers Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo were killed along with math teachers Richard Aspinwall and Christina Irimie when alleged gunman Colt Gray, 14, opened fire at Apalachee High School around 10:30 p.m., authorities said at an evening news conference.

Aspinwall also served as an assistant coach for the Winder school’s football team and as defensive coordinator, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.

Eight students and a teacher, previously identified as David Phenix, were also injured in the massacre.

Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith said the nine injured people are expected to survive.

Gray was arrested shortly after he began firing an AR-15-style weapon. He is expected to be charged as an adult.

“And I would ask all Georgians and all Americans to keep these families, these teachers and these students in your thoughts and prayers,” Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp said Wednesday night.

“And we will provide all the state resources that are needed from here until they are no longer needed. To support this community and to support this team behind me.”

Police say they are examining a wealth of evidence in their search for a motive behind the bloodshed.

But Gray had been on the FBI’s radar for more than a year before the shooting, the feds revealed.

The agency received several tips about threats to commit a school shooting in May 2023, prompting the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office to question the boy and his father.

Authorities said at the time that they had no grounds to arrest anyone or take further action.
