Oasis Reunion Inspires Memes About Their Next Breakup

Noel and Liam Gallagher are as famous for their fights as they are for their music. Can they keep up a whole tour?

One of the The biggest blood feud in rock history has reportedly been resolved: 15 years after brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher torpedoed the global phenomenon that was their band, Oasis will reunite for a live tour in 2025. It’s a truce fans thought they’d never see — and many joke that it can’t possibly last long.

The Gallagher feud dates all the way back to the boys’ shared bedroom in their parents’ house and became the stuff of legend when Oasis were conquering the charts in the 1990s with their Britpop sound: physical fights and bickering interviews, with one or the other leaving the band or cancelling tours, all fueled by drink and drugs. Their sibling rivalry raged until the elder Noel finally stepped down in 2009, describing Liam as “a man with a fork in a world of soup”. Liam would later start a Twitter account that he used to mock Noel, often calling him a “potato”. They both took every opportunity to lambast their brother in the press, often blaming him for the demise of Oasis (and their continued failure to get the band back together).

So how much can we trust the promise of arena concerts 11 months away? That’s an eternity for a relationship that could explode at any moment, and despite the excitement, there’s understandable anxiety about dropping a small fortune on tickets. That anxiety has taken the form of memes from people who believe our hearts will be broken by yet another bitter Gallagher breakup. Predictions of stage meltdowns, references to the shattered friendship depicted in the film The Banshees of Inisherinand sympathy for the tour manager are all in order here. Yes, you definitely have to pay extra for event insurance.

But there are reasons to remain optimistic. If Liam is at all motivated by spite — and his history with Noel suggests he is — he could stage the reunion to prove the naysayers wrong. On Sunday, he tweeted “Your attitude stinks” at anyone who claimed the shows wouldn’t happen (or would otherwise disappoint) next year. A climactic comeback would also prevent The 1975’s Matty Healy from making any further pronouncements about how the Gallagher boys should “waste their time” and bury the hatchet; comments like that have irked Liam in recent years. Maybe they were even the motivation for the reconciliation? Another theory: The rock stars behind “Champagne Supernova” felt overshadowed by Chappell Roan’s “Red Wine Supernova.” Or they were simply inspired by Charli XCX and Lorde to flesh it out on the remix.

Whatever the cause of this unexpected brotherly love, the adoring masses will be ready to do battle when tickets for the U.K. and Ireland concerts go on sale Aug. 31. (Other dates, including North America, have yet to be announced.) The competition and prizes could be as fierce as the frenzy over Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour, except among those who remember when MTV aired music videos. But who knows? Maybe younger generations will get swept up in Oasis nostalgia once “Wonderwall” hits TikTok. Stranger things have happened. Like the Gallaghers getting back together, for example.
