Northwestern Nevada under Fire Warning

The National Weather Service has issued a severe weather warning for much of northwestern Nevada and northeastern California, effective Monday at noon.

The advisory was issued Friday afternoon because of expected gusty winds and low humidity in the area for most of the Labor Day weekend. The forecast calls for southwest winds between 15 and 25 mph, with gusts between 30 and 40 mph. Humidity in the area is 9-15%.

Areas under the advisory include all of Washoe, Douglas and Storey counties, as well as Carson City and western Lyon County. The advisory extended to eastern and southern Lassen County in California.

The annual Burning Man event, which runs through Labor Day Monday, takes place just a few miles from the Fire Weather Watch zone in western Pershing County.

The Man’s ceremonial burning is scheduled for Saturday at 9 p.m.
