Northern Lights May Be Visible in Metro Detroit: What You Need to Know

Look outside! The Northern Lights may be visible again Thursday evening in southeastern Michigan due to a geomagnetic storm, the National Weather Service’s Detroit/Pontiac office said in a news release.

If the sky remains cloud-free, it could create an optimal viewing experience for Michiganders looking to see the Northern Lights, the weather bureau said.

What are the Northern Lights?

The Northern Lights, or aurora borealis, represent light waves from solar wind, creating a display of moving lights in the night sky.

Can’t see the Northern Lights? Use your phone

If you have trouble seeing the Northern Lights with the naked eye, try using your phone’s camera in night mode and remain still while you take the photo. You might be surprised at what’s dancing in the air.
