Northern Iowa vs. Hawaii Predictions & Best Bets

The Panthers and Rainbow Warriors have struggled to get their offense going thus far and not everything will fall into place in Week 4.

The Hawaii Rainbow Warriors will host the Northern Iowa Panthers in what will be the Week 4 finale. NIU’s new Air Raid offense has gotten off to a sluggish start, while Hawaii’s run-and-shoot offense hasn’t looked any better.

Those reasons—and many more—are why my Northern Illinois vs. Hawaii predictions have the Under so much in mind tonight. Read all about it in my college football predictions for Saturday, September 21.

Northern Iowa vs. Hawaii Prediction

My best chance
Under 48.5 (-110 at bet365)

My analysis
There’s no other way to say it: The Hawaii Rainbow Warriors have been a disappointing team through three games. There was cautious optimism surrounding the program in Year 3 of the Timmy Chang era, with his system fully installed and seven starters returning on both sides of the ball.

Well, so far they haven’t shown any improvement from last year. Hawaii struggled to a 35-14 win over a terrible Delaware State team in Week 0 and couldn’t come close to covering the 40.5-point spread. They were recently trounced 31-13 by Sam Houston State.

The Northern Iowa Panthers are ranked 25th in the Stats Perform FCS poll and recently lost 34-3 in a nonleague game to Nebraska. Mark Farley is in his 24th year leading the program and is working with a new group of assistants after overhauling his staff following three straight six-win seasons.

Farley wants to implement the Air Raid offense and bring in Luke Falk — a former Mike Leach quarterback — in the offseason. Falk was forced to step down in July and Farley hired another former Leach quarterback, Trey Tinsley.

So far, the Air Raid has not gotten off the Tarmac, averaging 18.3 points per game and 371 total yards per game. Quarterback Aidan Dunne is completing just 52% of his passes and this offense seems to be in a state of flux.

The weather is something to keep an eye on, with the current forecast predicting wind gusts of up to 30km/h, something punters have become accustomed to dealing with at games at the Clarence TC Ching Athletics Complex.

Neither team has shown much confidence this year, with both QBs completing less than 54% of their passes. Both teams look better on the defensive side of the ball, with NIU allowing just 17 ppg and Hawaii ranking 43rd in passing percentage.

Northern Iowa vs Hawaii parlay with a draw (SGP)

Neither team is giving off many buy signals, but at least there are some positives to talk about Hawaii. The Rainbow Warriors kept things interesting with a Big Ten school, albeit a bad one, losing to UCLA by three points. They didn’t play well against Sam Houston State, but the Bearkats have been a ride.

NIU allowed 8.8 yards per play to Nebraska, while gaining just 4.2 yards per play. Being outscored by 4.6 yards per play doesn’t inspire a lot of confidence, especially when Nebraska followed that up by losing to Illinois at home despite being a 9.5-point favorite.

Hawaii is in its third year of the system and has gotten off to a good start defensively, while NIU is in the early stages of a difficult offensive transition and was barely outscored by St. Thomas in a 17-10 rout in one of their wins.
