Yeah, none of the cast wanted the cute, adorable group dance number in the intro of The perfect couple. Were they born in Bomont? Director Susanne Bier told Vulture at the series premiere in Hollywood on Wednesday that she basically had to convince everyone to dance: “I wanted to do (the dance). It was my idea and I pushed for it. We sent (the cast) the video of the dance and they were like, ‘We’re not doing it, we’re not doing it, it’s too hard.'” And as for the choice to use Meghan Trainor’s “Criminal”? Bier just loved the song and felt it was a perfect fit. “The fact that she’s just singing about criminals just worked for this.”

Later, the cast gave more clarity on why they didn’t want to dance. Meghann Fahy told Variety that she struggles to learn choreography, and the team even went so far as to set up a WhatsApp group chat to oppose the idea: “Everyone in that group said they don’t want to do this because we just don’t get it.” Kidman admitted that she didn’t think her character, the famous and mysterious author Greer Winbury, would do a dance at her own son’s wedding: “Because I didn’t feel like Greer would dance! I felt like Greer would watch. But I danced like Greer. I love it and I’m so glad they let us all do it. Because there’s some joy in it.”

There was one brave cast member who danced to his own beat, and that man was Liev Schrieber. He explained how he was “practicing the dance moves” while everyone else was trying to hold off on doing it for as long as possible. He did wish he had been on screen more, though, telling Variety , “I just like dancing and I was a little disappointed when it came out that I wasn’t on it more, because I thought I was doing really well.”
