    The New York Mets have been in win-or-go-home mode for much of the past three weeks. Now that burden is weighing heavily on the Philadelphia Phillies.

    Game 4 of the National League Division Series at New York’s Citi Field puts the upstart Mets in a rare, advantageous position: with a 2-1 lead and the opportunity to shut down their rivals, the East champion Phillies.

    Left-handed Ranger Suárez will start for Philadelphia, opposed by New York left-hander Jose Quintana, although both pitchers will certainly be on a short leash with so much at stake.

    That’s doubly true for the Phillies as they face elimination: Ace Zack Wheeler will be available if things go south early, as his starting assignment for Game 5 won’t matter much if the Phillies can’t capture Game 4. And Game 3 starter Cristopher Sanchez will skip his scheduled bullpen session and be available for a limited period on just two days of rest.

    If the Mets win, they’ll pack their bags anyway, heading to San Diego or Los Angeles for the NL Championship Series. The Phillies, if they win today and win a Game 5 at home on Friday, would host the Padres (who lead the other NLDS 2-1), but would travel to LA if the Dodgers win the next two out West.

    After Bryce Harper walked and Nick Castellanos doubled to left, Alec Bohm brought in a run on a fielder’s choice and an error by Mets third baseman Mark Vientos.

    Quintana got the next two outs to prevent further damage, with the Phillies taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth.

    Ranger Suárez worked out of a bases-loaded jam for the second straight inning, allowing Brandon Nimmo to ground out to first base to end the threat.

    Suárez walked Starling Marte to take the lead and then gave up a single to Tyrone Taylor to put two up with no one out. The left-hander retired Francisco Lindor and Francisco Lindor, but Mark Vientos’ infield single loaded the bases – with Suárez ultimately winning the two-out battle with Nimmo.

    The Mets loaded the bases with one out against Ranger Suárez – a double by Mark Vientos, a walk for Brandon Nimmo and an infield single for Pete Alonso – but the left-handed Phillies bounced back, striking out Jose Iglesias and JD Martinez and escaped unharmed.

    Iglesias entered Wednesday’s game 6-for-8 in his career against Suárez.

    Mets starter Jose Quintana put the Phillies behind 1-2-3 in the top of the first inning, striking out Kyle Schwarber to start and Bryce Harper to end the frame.
