After New York Jets owner Woody Johnson fired head coach Robert Saleh on Tuesday morning, Saleh was reportedly assisted by team personnel in his departure.

According to Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio, Saleh was “escorted from the building by the team’s director of safety” after Johnson informed him of his decision. NFL insider Jordan Schultz confirmed Florio’s report.

However, SNY’s Connor Hughes reported that “multiple sources” told him that Saleh was not escorted from the facility by team security.

Florio noted that Saleh’s predecessor, Adam Gase, did not receive the same treatment when he was fired after the 2020 season.

ESPN’s Rich Cimini reported that Saleh was “stunned” by Johnson’s decision when he showed up at the team’s facility on Tuesday and thought it was “business as usual” as preparations began for a Monday night football game against the Buffalo Bills.

Johnson said in a statement that he made the decision because he felt the Jets “are not where we should be getting our hopes up.”

The Jets fell to 2-3 on Sunday with a 23-17 loss to the Minnesota Vikings in London, dropping Saleh’s record to 20-36 during his three-and-a-half-year tenure. New York’s offense has looked disjointed in its past two losses to the Vikings and Denver Broncos, but offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett won’t be fired at this time, according to Dianna Russini of The Athletic.

Defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich was promoted to interim head coach following Saleh’s firing. Although The Athletic’s Zack Rosenblatt reported that Ulbrich is “beloved by the entire Jets roster and staff,” it remains to be seen whether the new head coach will be able to solve New York’s problems on offense.

Johnson certainly hopes his decision will pay off, as the Jets have a chance to move into first place in the AFC East with a win over the Bills on Monday.
