New York Jets’ Jermaine Johnson suffers Achilles tendon injury, ejected against Titans

A scary moment in the game between the New York Jets and the Tennessee Titans ended in bad news for a starting edge rusher.

Third-year Jets starter Jermaine Johnson collapsed on the field in the third quarter against the Titans on Sunday. It was reported as an Achilles injury, according to ESPN’s Rich Cimini.

Johnson was clearly emotional as his teammates surrounded and comforted him as he was carried away after his injury.

The 25-year-old had two tackles on the day, one for loss, and was assessed a roughing the passer penalty. He had two tackles last week.

This was to be a banner year for him, with him finally making his breakthrough after a promising sophomore campaign.

He was an athletic freak coming out of college, but was always going to be a project. The Jets drafted him with the 26th overall pick in the 2022 NFL draft.

As a rookie he didn’t do much, playing in a rotational role. In his first two seasons he had picked up 84 tackles and 10 sacks.

The start of the year wasn’t what Johnson wanted, but that was true for most of the defensive line.

The Jets were already dealing with the chaos surrounding the Haason Reddick situation, and now things get even tougher for a team trying to bounce back from a below-expected performance.

It will be up to the young defenders to adapt quickly if the team wants to apply good pressing in the near future.

Johnson will have to wait and see how big the impact of this injury is, but the news does not look positive.
