New England Forecast: Return of Sunshine and Warmer Temperatures

Today will not be nearly as turbulent as yesterday’s severe thunderstorms. After a cool start with temperatures outside in the low to mid 60s, Greater Boston will see a sliver of high pressure clearing the skies and bringing temperatures back into the 80s this afternoon.

There may still be some patches of mist in the morning, but these will clear as the sun rises higher in the sky.

In southern New England, temperatures can reach over 80 degrees Fahrenheit, including in Boston.Boston Globe

A weak, general southwesterly flow will help build temperatures and remind us that summer isn’t quite over yet. There should be more sun than clouds today, with descending air from above keeping clouds to a minimum and Boston and the rest of the region dry.

Dew points today are likely to be around 17 to 17 degrees Celsius. The air will feel a bit heavy, but not extremely humid.

In much of southern New England, dew points will rise to around 65 degrees Fahrenheit, making the air feel somewhat muggy.Boston Globe

Allergy sufferers will likely still be bothered by ragweed pollen this week, as the plant is usually fully grown at this time of year, especially since it has rained more than average this month.

Shower again on Wednesday

Our next weatherman will likely arrive Wednesday with a fast-moving front moving through New England. A moist air mass will enter our region ahead of the front, bringing dew points into the very humid 70s and creating an afternoon likely to produce scattered showers and thunderstorms. Hail could be another sticking point for Wednesday’s storms — Boston will likely avoid the stronger storms, with much of the threat concentrated west of the city.

Tuesday’s overview

Southern New England: A pleasant day ahead with temperatures likely to reach the low 80s with partly to mostly sunny skies. Winds will remain mostly calm with dew points rising to the low to mid 60s in the afternoon.

Western Massachusetts: The warmest readings in the region are likely to hit the Pioneer Valley — highs in the mid 80s. The Berkshires are likely to stay in the low 80s this afternoon. Expect mostly sunny skies with lows reaching the low 60s.

Cape Cod and Islands: Temperatures are likely to remain in the mid-70s with variable cloudiness throughout the day. There will be plenty of sunshine, alternating with dew points, making the air feel slightly humid in the afternoon.

Northern New England: A mostly dry day across the northern part of the region. Temperatures will climb into the upper 70s and lower 80s with increasing cloud cover throughout the day, but not enough to completely block out the sun. A patchy shower is possible in the afternoon across northern New Hampshire and Maine, but will only result in a drizzle.

Today, temperatures across much of New England are likely to be around 80 degrees Fahrenheit.Boston Globe
