MTV VMAs live: Taylor Swift and Post Malone win first award of the night and Flavor Flav presents Jordan Chiles with another bronze medal

Katy Perry lists all her hits for Video Vanguard

Wow, that was an amazing performance by Katy Perry. She may have ruined her current album, but you can’t deny that Perry has had HITS.

Here are all the melodies you just heard

  • Dark horse
  • AND
  • I am His, He is Mine ft. Doechii
  • Californian girls
  • Teenage dream
  • I kissed a girl
  • Fireworks
  • Lives

Katy Perry floats in the air

Video Vanguard’s performance has started and Katy Perry starts with her hit ET.

She flies everywhere!

Orlando Bloom is here to reward Katy Perry

Who’s going to bust the rumors? Katy Perry’s partner and father of her child Orlando Bloom is here to present his beloved with the Video Vanguard Award.

“I fell in love with her as Katherine Hudson.”

There is still so much to be done!

It’s been over an hour now and we’ve only won one prize.

We also have Katy Perry’s big medley and Chappell Roan’s debut performance.

I’m still recovering from Sabrina Carpenter’s performance.

But stay with us, there’s much more to come.

Justice for Espresso

I loved Sabrina’s mash-up performance, but I’m still mad that Espresso didn’t get to compete in Song of the Summer.

Since its launch in April, we can no longer ignore Espresso.

Just a month ago, the song passed the 1 billion streams mark on Spotify, but its follow-up Please, Please, Please has been nominated for the Song of the Summer award.

I think the appeal of Barry Keoghan in a little black T-shirt is just so great.

Sabrina Carpenter Just Kissed an Alien (Really)

It feels like a VMA ceremony now!

Cyndi Lauper introduces Sabrina Carpenter

Sabrina takes the stage, introduced by VMA icon Cyndi Lauper.

Carpenter falls from the sky while sitting on a giant diamond and singing her hit Please, Please, Please.

The crowd goes wild.

She dances with an alien and an astronaut while singing a medley of songs from her new album.

She kisses the alien!

It’s really her moment.

Chappell Roan cancels shows to perform at the VMAs

If there’s one performance I’m looking forward to tonight, it’s Chappell Roan.

Our Femininomenon will be performing on the VMA stage for the first time and is also nominated for Best New Artist.

Known for her theatrical costumes and campy stage antics, this is one performance you won’t want to miss.

But in the weeks leading up to the show, the 26-year-old singer divided her fans after it was announced she would be canceling two of her European shows to allow for rehearsals.

“Due to scheduling conflicts, I have had to make the extremely difficult decision to cancel my shows in Paris and Amsterdam. I have rescheduled my show in Berlin to September 23rd,” she shared in late August.

But fans quickly turned around about the singer when they suspected she had canceled the shows to rehearse for the VMAs.

She later confirmed this by writing on Instagram that she was rehearsing for the VMAs.

The news comes a few weeks after she made several emotional appeals to her fans to respect her privacy.

You can read more about it here:

First half hour heavy on the performances

We’re already half an hour into the VMAs and one award has already been given out…

BUT we’ve had a lot of gigs so far, we’ve seen the following:

  • Eminem
  • LISA
  • Teddy is swimming
  • Karol G
  • Shawn Mendes

Kendrick Lamar Brings Drake Beef to VMAs

Kendrick has had a huge year, thanks in large part to his VERY high profile feud with Drake, which gave us the #1 hit Not Like Us.

Not only is the track nominated for both Song of the Year and Summer, but Kendrick will also be performing it live, so we can’t wait to see if he takes Drake directly to task on stage.

But until then, you can probably dig a little deeper into the Drake/Kendrick lore with Al Newstead.

Shawn Mendes Debuts His New Song

Shawn Mendes performs his brand new song, Nobody Knows.

It is a ballad full of emotions and a slow tempo, which he sings with passion with an acoustic guitar.

You can barely see him through all that smoke.

Paris Hilton Introduces LISA’s Rockstar Performance

Tonight we’re leaning heavily on nostalgia and I love that they brought on early 2000s icon Paris Hilton to introduce LISA’s performance of Rockstar.

Of course, she also wove in the words “that’s hot” and her newer slogan “sliving.”

Thai rapper LISA is in her element during her first solo VMA performance.

Flames, choreography and strobe lights.

That’s what the VMAs are all about.

Stop everything! Megan Thee Stallion has a snake!

Megan Thee Stallion is back from her vacation in an absolutely perfect imitation of Britney Spears’ legendary I’m A Slave 4 U outfit, complete with a giant, live yellow snake.

The host only held the slippery friend for a moment before asking him to take it away again.

“I tried to hold it for Britney,” she laughed

Are there any Australians who qualify for a VMA?

I’m glad you asked.

Yes!

Troye Sivan is up for a VMA for his music video for “Rush.”

I really hope he gets the approval because the dance in this piece is iconic.

You just can’t look away from it.

He’s had a successful year and his other video clip Got Me Started was even parodied on Saturday Night Live by Timothee Chalamet.

He’ll have to beat out a few stars, most notably dancing pop star Tate McRae.

We’re rooting for you, Troye!

We’ve reached the first commercial break!

How are we feeling? Did we like the Eminem opener? Who are you excited to see perform? Are you as in love with Megan thee Stallion as we are?

Let us know what you think in the comments!

First win of the night for Taylor and Postie

TS and Post Malone accepted the first award of the night. Swift began her speech by acknowledging that the ceremony comes on a somber day for Americans.

“I just want to say that waking up in New York on September 11th… that’s the most important thing today,” she said.

She then praised her teammate Post Malone and ended with a joke.

“It took him forever to stop calling me ma’am.”

Flavor Flav replaces Jordan Chile’s Olympic bronze medal

Flavor Flav, the unlikely champion of women’s sports, has replaced gymnast Jordan Chiles’ Olympic bronze medal, which she lost in Paris.

Before they presented the award for best collaboration, he hung a bronze bell chain around her neck.

Chiles lost third place on floor after the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) ruled in favor of Ana Bărbosu, who was subsequently awarded the bronze.

Romania’s Bărbosu and her team had appealed to CAS the CAS’s decision to open an investigation into the US team’s floor exercise results four seconds after the one-minute deadline set by the International Gymnastics Federation.

The appeal’s success lowered Chiles’ score and she dropped to third place, behind Brazilian winner Rebeca Andrade and her American teammate Simone Biles, who won silver.

“I wanted to surprise you with this, Jordan, you did it, congratulations, you deserve it,” he said.

  • Wanna Be — GlRilla, Megan Thee Stallion
  • Wild Ones — Jessie Murph with Jelly Roll
  • Seven — Jung Kook with Latto
  • I Had Some Help — Post Malone featuring Morgan Wallen
  • Fortnight — Taylor Swift with Post Malone

Slim Shady’s death divided fans

Well, there you have it: For his 2024 performance, Eminem performed the same song he did at the VMAs 24 years ago (but with worse wigs?)

Eminem rose from the dead this year to murder his infamous alter ego on his Billboard #1 album The Death of Slim Shady.

Despite the album’s success, fans were divided into two camps: those who were happy to hear Em at his most provocative again, and those who found it all a bit… creepy?

Look What Shocked Us At The 1984 VMAs

On September 14, 1984, the very first VMAs took place at Radio City Music Hall in New York City.

Madonna, Rod Stewart, ZZ Top and David Bowie were the performers and Michael Jackson and Herbie Hancock were the big winners of the evening.

It was also the night that Madonna gave one of her most iconic performances ever, performing the song Like a Virgin.

She appeared on a 16-foot-tall wedding cake in a “spicy,” “daring,” sheer wedding dress and bustier, with a silver belt buckle that read “BOY TOY.”

“The VMAs, as far as I can remember, always tried to be contemporary and fresh,” Dr Liz Giuffre, Senior Lecturer in Communication and Music at the University of Technology Sydney, says:

“When Madonna started with Like a Virgin, a lot of people still saw it as a groundbreaking endeavor.”

There have been more raunchy moments since then, but there’s no doubt that this performance, still talked about 40 years later, paved the way for the VMAs we know today.
