Monaco 2-1 Barcelona: George Ilenikhena scores as Barca lose to 10 men in Champions League

Nigerian striker George Ilenikhena scored on his Champions League debut as AS Monaco pulled off a surprise win over 10-man Barcelona.

The 18-year-old substitute rushed on to a long ball from Vanderson over the defence in the 71st minute and fired his shot past Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

Eric Garcia had already received a red card earlier in the match, just 10 minutes before the end, when he committed a foul on Takumi Minamino as the last man after a bad pass from the back by Ter Stegen.

Monaco took the lead shortly afterwards when Maghnes Akliouche fired the ball past the pinned Ter Stegen.

Barcelona’s own teenage star Lamine Yamal equalised with his first Champions League goal when he seized a long ball, cut inside and then fired a low shot into the bottom corner.

But Ilenikhena’s goal, his first since arriving from Royal Antwerp last summer, ensured Barcelona’s early defeat.

Vanderson’s shot from the edge of the box was deflected wide of the post, while Minamino’s effort hit the crossbar.

It could have been a more convincing victory, but Folarin Balogun saw a penalty reversed just before half-time after a video referee (VAR) check after he went down too easily following a foul by Inigo Martinez.
